Glossary
Extruder: A part inside the print head in which filament is heated and squeezed out through the nozzle.
Most 3D Printers have either one or two of these - a second allows for more than one material to be used in a print.
Nozzle: The small tip with a hole through which melted plastic is pushed onto the build plate. These come in various sizes.
Print-core: An interchangeable housing for swapping out different nozzles easily. Only some printers have these.
PVA/PLA: See FDM materials guide
Selecting the printer
It is important to select the right printer early on so you see the correct build volume you have to work with.
Step 1: Click printer name shown on the tool bar.
Step 2: If the printer you want to choose is on the list already, select it. If not, click the 'Add printer' button.
Step 3: Click 'Add a non-networked printer', and select the printer you want to use, and finally click Add button. You will see the build plate change automatically.
Selecting the Nozzles
- Cura refers to the units that house its nozzles as 'Printcores'
- You can change the printcore size to match the printer you plan to use (The uCreate Makerspace Ultimaker printers are labelled with the current printcore size) in the upper menu in Cura.
- If the selected printer has two extruders, you may need to change the setting for both nozzles.
- You should also select the correct materials. For our printers this is normally 'Generic PLA' for extruder 1 and 'Generic PVA' for extruder 2.
- BB printcores are only for PVA support material and AA is for everything else.
